My Great Uncle Bruce Weber, commander of the VF-31 led a strike on the Japanese

fleet at Kure Harbor Japan flying a F6F Hellcat. Despite heavy anti-aircraft fire Bruce landed a direct hit that

destroyed the IJN Battleship Ise. He was awarded the Navy Cross Medal for this action.
